TripTracker

A React Native travel data visualization MVP built for DTU's Personal Data Interaction for Mobile and Wearables course.

Project cover for TripTracker.

Overview

TripTracker was created for DTU's 02808 Personal Data Interaction for Mobile and Wearables course. The project explored how travelers can collect, reflect on, and act on their own travel data through a personal informatics lens.

The research process combined an Observable dashboard for graph evaluation, Figma prototypes for color palette and layout studies, and mobile usability testing with ten participants aged 18 to 25. The evaluations favored simpler travel-data visualizations, a travel-themed color palette, intuitive navigation, and a mixed layout strategy balancing quick overview screens with deeper scrollable detail views.

The final MVP was implemented with Expo and React Native, using Tamagui for UI, Gifted Charts for visualization, and Realm for local data. It supports trip tracking, visited countries, travel buddies, spending analytics, accommodation calendars, transport and landmark views, notes, statistics, and interactive visual cards for reflecting on past trips.

Highlights

  • Designed a personal informatics app for tracking trips, countries visited, travel buddies, expenses, accommodations, transport, food, and landmarks.
  • Ran three evaluations and one experiment covering visualization choices, color palettes, navigation, layout effectiveness, and user preference.
  • Built a React Native MVP with interactive maps, trip cards, category spending charts, calendars, statistics, and offline-first local data storage.
